Malapascua Island
The World’s Only Reliable Thresher Shark Dive Site
What Makes Malapascua Special
Malapascua Island is the only place on Earth where you can dive with thresher sharks year-round, reliably. These prehistoric-looking predators, with their long sickle-shaped tails, gather at Kimud Shoal just off the island’s coast before dawn, creating a once-in-a-lifetime diving opportunity. Beyond the sharks, Malapascua offers incredible macro diving, mandarin fish at sunset, ornate ghost pipefish, and thriving reef systems. It’s the flagstone destination for serious divers.
Diving Highlights
Kimud Shoal (Thresher Shark Site)
Depth: 20-25m | Requirement: Advanced Open Water (AOW) certification
The legendary dive site where thresher sharks hunt at dawn. Divers descend to a sandy bottom and wait quietly as these impressive predators move through the water. Year-round sightings. Expect 3-5 sharks per dive at an 80% sighting rate. Dives happen daily at sunrise (4:30 AM departure).
Monad Shoal (Deeper Thresher Alternative)
Depth: 30-45m | Requirement: AOW + Deep Diver
An alternative thresher shark site at deeper depths. Fewer crowds and excellent shark encounters. Seasonal visits (December-May are best). Crystal-clear visibility.
Gato Island
Depth: 10-30m | Type: Cave diving, reef
A dramatic limestone island with underwater cave systems, white-tip reef sharks, schools of batfish, and pristine hard corals. The cave diving is moderate difficulty and an exhilarating experience. Home to giant trevally and jacks.
Sunset Mandarin Fish Dive
Depth: 5-12m | Type: Macro, drift
Evening dives targeting vibrant mandarin fish as they emerge from coral heads for mating displays. Ornate ghost pipefish, seahorses, and rare nudibranchs also present. Spectacular bioluminescence possible at dusk.
Pygmy Seahorse Dive
Depth: 12-20m | Type: Macro
Specialized dives hunting for tiny pygmy seahorses camouflaged on sea fans. Guides skilled at spotting these masters of disguise. Also look for nudibranchs, shrimp, and crabs.
Blue Coral Beach Resort
The most popular mid-range choice on Malapascua — beachfront location, comfortable air-conditioned rooms, and a relaxed vibe that keeps divers coming back season after season.

Frequently Asked Questions
What certification do I need to dive with thresher sharks?
You must hold an Advanced Open Water (AOW) certification to dive Kimud Shoal (20-25m depth). If you don’t have your AOW, consider getting it certified in Cebu before arriving, or we can arrange a quick certification dive on Malapascua. Monad Shoal (deeper site) requires Deep Diver specialty as well.
When is the best time to see thresher sharks?
Year-round! Malapascua is the only place where threshers are reliably seen every day of the year. Sighting rates are 70-85% on any given dive. Dawn dives (4:30 AM) have the highest success rate. Morning visibility is typically clearer than afternoon.
How long are the dives?
Thresher shark dives typically last 30-45 minutes due to early morning cold and depth. Other dives (Gato, mandarin fish, macro) run 40-60 minutes depending on conditions and your interest level.
Is the water cold?
Early morning dives (threshers) can be chilly—water is typically 24-26°C (75-78°F) at dawn. A 3mm wetsuit or rash guard is recommended. Afternoon dives are slightly warmer (26-28°C).
Can beginners dive here?
Beginners can dive Malapascua, but not the thresher sites (Kimud Shoal). Gato Island, reef dives, and macro dives are suitable for Open Water certified divers. Most people do a guided beginner dive on day 1, then pursue thresher sharks or advanced diving on subsequent days.
What should I pack?
Bring your dive certification card, log book, underwear, light clothing, sunscreen, and any personal medications. We provide wetsuits, BCDs, and tanks. Bring a small dry bag for electronics. An underwater camera is highly recommended.
Can I do non-diving activities?
Yes. Malapascua has beautiful beaches, snorkeling spots, island hops, and hiking. The island community is charming with local restaurants and cafes. Many guests spend afternoons at the beach or exploring the village between dives.
